<br />
22 boxes were turned in -- and they're pretty awesome! Very creative! We took one picture of each box (so can't really see EVERY side well). Pictures will be posted on our blogspot ... hopefully by Monday. Check them out at www.severeartchallenge.blogspot.com<br />
(note: severe - not sevier)<br />
<br />
They've been placed around the valley. We'll be picking them back up from these places (FOR YOU - please don't YOU pick them up!) May 4 to exhibit them at the artist's dinner the night of May 4 and to remain on display for the remainder of the ARTSHOW May 5, 6, and 7. Please pick up your boxes at 3:00 p.m, Saturday, May 7 at the art "pickup" (after the show is over).<br />
<br />
THANKS AGAIN for making our 30TH ANNUAL COMMISSIONER'S ART SHOW better than ever this year. Your "Out of the Box" Challenge creations are TERRIFIC!!<br />
<br />
Check the Reaper (April 20) to see if the picture the Reaper reporter took of your boxes (last Friday) got in the paper ....<br />

<br />
April 1st is the last day! Yeah! Congratulations! We are excited to see what you have accomplished! <br />
<br />
Just a few reminders, please read carefully so that you know what to do. <br />
- Call for your interview and photo today!(Kevin- 435-893-0457 or 435-979-2881) <br />
- Remember that you need to pick one piece that you would like to go into the 18 month calendar, and bring it in to Kevin’s office on April 1st from 10:00 to 2:00. <br />
- We will need to know how many pieces you have been able to complete when you bring in your piece. <br />
- You are responsible for framing any art piece that you would like to sell. You also need to decide on your other pieces, how you want them displayed and then be sure you have what you need to do so. <br />
- Bring in all your pieces when you bring in your art work for the show, Tuesday May 3, 1:00 to 4:00. <br />
- A 4x6 standing grid area is available for each artist with about 7 hangers. We have some wooden easels available also, if you will let us know how many you need on April 1st. If you need table space please let us know then also. <br />
- You will need to be responsible for any special hanging or displaying hardware. <br />
- You are responsible to hang/display all your pieces (however you choose). <br />
- We are providing a price tag for any piece you want to sell. Bring it in filled out and ready to go. <br />
- Choose a piece to go in the silent auction. Decide on a ‘minimum price’. <br />
- Also choose a piece to go in the raffle. This piece is donated but could be returned to you if it is not chosen by the raffle winner. The artist gets to keep the money donated. If we get more that $200.00 donated we will have two winners. <br />
- We will honor each ‘Challenge’ participant at the Awards Dinner on Wednesday May 4th at 6:00 PM at the Sevier County Admin. Building. The cost is $12.00 a plate. Please buy your tickets on ‘Entry Day’. <br />
- Each of you is invited to our ‘Artist Reception’. It is to honor you and your hard work. We would like for you to invite all your friends and family so you can show your work and share your story. The Reception is May 6th at 6:30 PM at the Atrium. We will have refreshements. <br />
<br />
We will have official invites for you to get and pass out at the sign in table on Entry Day. <br />
<br />
Thanks for all your hard work these ‘30’ weeks.<br />
<br />
Hopefully all of you have success stories to share even if it is one or two works of art that you wouldn’t have done otherwise. <br />
<br />
Looking forward to seeing each of you on April 1st! <br />
Call me if you have questions - 896-7571 <br />

<br />
We have been making plans for our 30th Anniversary “Big Event” and we need helpers so please call Jeannie and volunteer to help us make this happen. 896-7571<br />
<br />
I hope you are all painting and creating like crazy. Our deadline is coming up quickly and we have a lot to do before our ‘Show’ that is now scheduled for May 3rd (bring your art work in) and the show will be the 4-7th. We changed our date so that we could still be associated with the Natural Resources Fair and the Home Show. The ‘Call for Entries’ will be coming in the mail soon with more information.<br />
<br />
The first reminder for you is that on April 1st you will need to choose which painting you would like to have in our 18 month calendar and take it into Kevin’s office so we can photograph it and get it ready to print.<br />
<br />
We had hoped that everyone would have called Kevin for your interview date so that we could get your picture and your success stories or your struggles written and onto our Blog and in the Reaper. I realize that life is beating us up because I have had my share of struggles in getting my paintings done but, it is time to get our interviews taken care of. We can’t promote you if you don’t give us the info. and pose for a picture. Call Kevin today and make an appointment so he can do his job. This is a busy time for him so don’t put it off until the last minute or you won’t get in. His work number is 435-893-0457 or his cell is 435-979-2881.<br />
<br />
Our Blog is your opportunity to get your name and your work out to the public. Take pictures of your work and write up a little blurb to go with it and then get with Kamie Allen - <a href="mailto:severeartchallenge@gmail.com" target="_blank">severeartchallenge@gmail.com</a> (896-0252). She will help you get it posted on the blog. Our blog should be a running account of what we are doing. We need to keep posting information so that our blog will be interesting and people will want to keep checking it for possible purchases. Tell all your friends about our blog at <a href="http://www.severeartchallenge.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">http://www.severeartchallenge.<wbr></wbr>blogspot.com</a> so that they can visit it. <br />
<br />
Most of us don’t want our paintings sitting around after the show so we thought it would be great to have a silent auction, during the week of the show, for any art work that you want moved. Please have your pieces framed and a ‘minimum price’ decided when you bring them in. <br />
<br />
We are also planning a raffle. We would like every artist to donate a piece of art work that will go toward the raffle. Not every painting will go to the winner, they will choose which piece they want to take home out of the 22 participants. The artist that is chosen by the winner will receive the money donated. If the donation is over $200 we will choose another winner and another artist will get the balance of the donation money and the opportunity to have their piece in someone’s home or office.<br />
<br />
We have scheduled an Artists reception for Friday at 6:30 pm. We would like every artist to attend and to personally invite everyone they can think of to come see our pieces and talk to the artists about their “Challenge” experiences, etc. Refreshments will be served. <br />
<br />
Thanks for accepting the challenge I hope it has proven to be a good experience. <br />
<br />
Good Luck!!! Remember your goals and keep working. We will see you May 3rd.<br />

Paul Klee declared, in one of art history's most impassioned statements on the subject, I don't have to pursue it. It will possess me always, I know it. Color and I are one. I am a painter.<br />
<br />
Contemplating a well-ordered palette, Kandinsky rhapsodized: The eye... is charmed by the beauty... of the color. The spectator experiences a feeling of... pleasure, like a gourmet [with] a tasty morsel in his mouth... The psychological power of color becomes apparent, calling forth a vibration from the soul.<br />
<br />
Numerous artists and writers have weighed in on the element Roy Lichtenstein called crucial in painting, but... very hard to talk about. There is almost nothing you can say [about color] that holds up as a generalization, because it depends on too many factors: size, modulation, the rest of the field, a certain consistency that color has with forms, and the statement you're trying to make.<br />
<br />
Color is so much a matter of direct and immediate perception that any discussion of theory needs to be accompanied by experiments with the colors themselves.<br />
<div align="right">-Walter Sargent</div><br />
The whole world, as we experience it visually, comes to us through the mystic realm of color.<div align="right">- Hans Hofmann</div><br />
There are no colors, strictly speaking, only coloring materials.<div align="right">- Jean Dubuffet</div><br />
In order to use color effectively it is necessary to recognize that color deceives continually.<div align="right">- Josef Albers</div><br />
The laws of color are unutterably beautiful, just because they are not accidental.<div align="right">-Vincent Van Gogh</div><br />
Some of us come on earth seeing - some of us come on earth seeing color.<div align="right">- Louise Nevelson</div><br />
I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for.<div align="right">- Georgia O'Keeffe</div><br />
Why do two colors, put one next to the other, sing? Can one really explain this? No.<div align="right">- Pablo Picasso</div><br />
When I paint green, it doesn't mean grass; when I paint blue, it doesn't mean sky.<div align="right">- Henri Matisse</div><br />
Give me mud and I will paint you the skin of Venus.<div align="right">- Eugene Delacroix</div><br />
Whenever I give a demonstration of color mixing, I ask my audience where they experience the main difficulty. The answer is invariably the same - 'mixing greens.'<div align="right">- Michael Wilcox</div><br />
I love red so much, I almost want to paint everything red.<div align="right">- Alexander Calder</div><br />
If one says 'red,' and there are 50 people listening, it can be expected that there will be 50 reds in their minds.<div align="right">- Josef Albers</div><br />
I cannot pretend to feel impartial about colors. I rejoice with the brilliant ones and am genuinely sorry for the poor browns.<div align="right">- Winston Churchill</div><br />
I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it.<div align="right">- Alice Walker</div><br />
I have finally discovered the color of the atmosphere. It is violet.<div align="right">- Claude Monet</div><br />
Yellow is capable of charming God.<div align="right">- Vincent Van Gogh</div><br />
There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who, thanks to their art and intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun.<div align="right">- Pablo Picasso</div><br />
I've been forty years discovering that the queen of all colors is black.<div align="right">- Pierre-Auguste Renoir</div><br />
We were always intoxicated with color, with words that speak of color, and with the sun that makes colors live.<div align="right">- André Derain</div><br />
Mere color, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways.<div align="right">- Oscar Wilde</div><br />
Seek the strongest color effect possible... the content is of no importance.<div align="right">- Henri Matisse</div><br />
The purest thoughtful minds are those which love color the most.<div align="right">- John Ruskin</div><div align="right"><br />

<br />
I thought I would start by telling the inspiration that brought about this “Severe Art Challenge”<br />
Suzette Billedeaux Gertsch ---- www.themidwayartist.com<br />
* President and Creator of Midway Art Association<br />
* She went on a painting trip to Europe in 2009 to paint with Jon Hall a ‘plein air’ artist she admired. It was he who introduced her to the notion of a “limner contract” and encouraged her to take the challenge. (A ‘limner’ was a skilled illustrator of manuscripts in medieval Europe. Later - self-taught painters of portraits and landscapes who traveled from town to town, finding subjects along the way and selling the work to the local populace.) Jon combined this tradition with a personal artistic challenge. Therefore leading to what Suzette’s calls her ...<br />
* Limness Contract<br />
300 sketches in one year<br />
She said “What happens when you sign a contract -with yourself- to produce an ambitious quantity of work in a year? It’s positively life changing!” She said that all the degrees that she earned from BYU and having taught art in High schools in Australia and SLC for many years... Cannot compare to the lessons she’s learned and is still learning since the beginning of her challenge. <br />
<br />
I thought it interesting that her contract ends today and ours begins today! <br />
* Documented her progress in a blog.<br />
<br />
15 minutes after reading about Suzette’s contract with herself I knew that something along the same lines would not only be the Big Event that I was hoping for - that would make our 30th Anniversary spectacular. But it would also be the vehicle that would empower us to bring our creativity to the level of proficiency that we find ourselves dreaming about.<br />
<br />
The words “Can You Imagine” kept going through my head. Pretty soon the “Severe Art Challenge concept was born. Most of you know what it is but...<br />
<br />
Lets go over the details-<br />

The Sevier County Art Commission held their “Severe Art Challenge Kick- Off” Wednesday night with great success. Fifteen of the participating artists attended the “Kick-Off” to show off their “Warm-Up” pieces and share in each other’s talented accomplishments. The “Severe Art Challenge”, of producing 30 pieces of art in 30 weeks, has been extended to the various artists of Sevier County in celebration of the upcoming 30-year anniversary of the Commissioner’s Art show. The “Warm-Up Challenge” was extended for those who wanted to get a head start of the originalchallenge and try their hand at producing an exceptional piece of art each week for the 6 weeks before of the September starting date. The results were both beautiful and amazing. The Warm-up pieces were to depict interpretations of Sevier County specifically. These pieces will be available for viewing and purchase at the upcoming ATV Jamboree, so look for them then. And check out all the artist’s progress on Facebook under “The Severe Art Challenge - Sevier County”.<br />

Thank You! ~ I’ve even had people out of Sevier County want to participate!<br /> Remember ‘Nothing happens until I make it happen’ so to get your registration in by July 21st and take advantage of the ‘Warm-up Challenge’ which begins that date and goes until September 1st. when our ‘Severe Art Challenge’ will begin.<br /> Plan to join us for a Kick Off Celebration and receive your ‘Severe Art Challenge’ T-shirt - which we hope you will wear proudly to let the world know what we are doing. Come and see what our Artists have done so far in the ‘Warm-up Challenge’. There will be refreshments and time for questions and sharing.<br /> Please visit our blog at www.severeartchallenge.blogspot.com and find us on facebook to keep updated on each Artist and their progress.<br /> Put some real thought into your ‘Personal Artistic Challenge’ make it as simple as you need to be successful, but also give yourself a challenge so that you can see improvement in the end. If you need to work on being consistent with your sketching then that can be your goal. If you want to improve on your technique then set that as your goal. What ever your desires for improvement are we will accept and will display at our April 2011 Show.<br /> Spread the word so that we can meet our goal of getting ‘30 Sevier County Artists’ to participate. We all know that there are rewards and benefits that come when we commit to something. We can all do it!<br />“Commitment leads to action. Action brings your dreams closer.” -Marcia Wieder<br /><br /> Also-<br /> I am working with someone that is trying to get a ‘Farmers Art Market’ going here in Richfield at the City Park. It will be another perfect opportunity for us to get our Art out in the public view so that our names and works will become noticed and recognized. We are hoping to have things ready to go by the end of the month so look at what you have to display or sell, or what you can work on at the park to promote yourself. We think that is an event to celebrate! And celebrate we will. <div><br /></div><div>Anyone that knows our committee knows that we are always up for a challenge. We have tried to give out challenging opportunities each year so that each of us can learn more and reach out a little farther to become a better artist. This year is no different. This challenge will be the one that you will remember and thank us for later.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">To commemorate the 30th year anniversary of the Sevier County Commissioners Show, we introduce our </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#FF0000;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;">Severe Art Challenge</span></b></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">to magnify our special category theme "Sevier County"</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">We challenge every artist in Sevier County to create 30 pieces of original art in 30 weeks.</span></div><div><br /></div><div>Don't run away yet - read on. </div><div><br /></div><div>That is only one artwork a week! From September 1st to April 1st. We challenge you to focus on improving your art. We would like to get 30 artists that would commit themselves to the challenge with the idea that "practice makes perfect". We want each artist to set a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><b>personal artistic challenge</b></span> that would empower them to develop and improve their <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-large;">gift</span>.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">"The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without the work." - Emile Zola</span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><br /></span></span></div>This challenge will hold us accountable to both process and productivity. <b>This will be your contract with yourself.</b> You can choose how you will make this work for you. Some may choose to spend 90 minutes on each artwork and another may want to spend several hours. It all depends on what you want to have developed for yourself in the end. We've heard a lot of you say that you wish you could do more but that life just keeps you too busy. So here is your chance to take charge and make the impossible happen. <div><br /></div><div>Every artist wants two things; to be a better artist and to have their art promoted so that people know who they are and what they do. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-large;">Here is our opportunity.</span> We will promote your art while you are working and you will become the <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-large;">'Featured Artists' </span></b>at the 2011 Commissioners Art Show. We will display each piece of art for recognition. </div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-large;">If all 30 artists complete their goal, we will have 900 pieces of art to show at our 30th Annual Commissioners Show! Wow! Just imagine!</span></div><div><br /></div><div>Here are the details:</div><div><ul><li>Pre-registration and a fee of $30 need to be in prior to July 19, 2010. Every participant will receive a 'Severe Art Challenge' T-shirt at a kick-off meeting, Sept 1, 2010. </li><li>You can create your 30 pieces, any size, any medium and as fast or as slow as you choose. We will not require that you frame any of those pieces. The 30 weeks will not begin until Wed, September 1, 2010. We have put together a warm-up challenge for those that are interested to help get ready for this SEVERE CHALLENGE. </div></div><div><br /></div><div>When we have completed our challenge on April 1, 2011, each participating artist will select their favorite pieces to go through a selection process. 18 of those art pieces that are chosen will be featured in a special <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-large;"><b>1st Edition Sevier County 18 month Calendar for 2011 - 2012</b></span>. Sales of the calendar will begin at the April show and continue through the ATV Jamboree in 2011.
